Helen Jean Slate, 79, of Lafayette, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2024, in Lafayette, Indiana. She was born on November 10, 1944, in Columbia, Missouri, to Roy H. and Helen B. Lane. Her life was a testament to love, joy, and unwavering faith.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Leroy Lane. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Ned L. Slate, brother, James E. Lane (Eddie) of Columbia Missouri. Her legacy lives on through her children, Parrish (Jan) Slate, Shane (Angel) Slate, Nikki (Phil) Brewer, and Jeremy (Carmen) Slate. She was a proud grandmother to twelve grandchildren and a cherished great-grandmother to thirteen.
Jean’s journey of love began in Columbia, Missouri, where she met Ned at the Playboy Drive Inn. Their union was a beautiful partnership that spanned nearly six decades. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, adventure, and shared passions, especially for classic cars and family gatherings.
A graduate of Hickman High School in 1963, Jean’s career was marked by dedication and service. She began working at her mother's Bull Pen Cafe in Missouri while still in high school. Her compassionate nature led her to a fulfilling 28-year career as a phlebotomist at St. E, Unity, and Home Hospitals. Her professionalism and kindness touched the lives of many.
Jean’s faith journey began in 1976 when she embraced Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. A faithful member of East Tipp Baptist Church, she was known for her active participation and unwavering devotion to her church community. Her faith was a guiding light throughout her life.
Her vibrant personality was characterized by her faithfulness, humor, love, and boundless energy. She was an avid sports enthusiast, cheering passionately for the Missouri Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Jean pitched for the Pink Lady’s Softball team and also enjoyed playing volleyball. Her creative spirit shone through in her crochet and embroidery work, and she treasured time spent with her family.
Jean had a deep love for animals, especially her soul dogs, Colt and Rudy. She was an enthusiastic supporter of classic car shows and cruise-ins, often attending them with Ned. Her fondness for lunches with friends and watching her grandkids' sporting events. Jean was also a devoted fan of Joe Kenda.
A celebration of Jean’s life will be held on October 29, 2024, at 4:00 PM at East Tipp Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to Natalie’s Second Chance No Kill Shelter, a cause dear to Jean’s heart.
Helen Jean Slate's life was a beautiful tapestry of faith, love, and laughter. Her sassy spirit and caring nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her. While we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the incredible life she lived and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
